Nearly 20,000 customers were without power in San Bernardino and Highland Monday due to a fire at a Southern California Edison substation.

The fire began about 2:10 p.m. at a substation at Rialto and Waterman avenues (map) in the southeast San Bernardino, according to the San Bernardino City Unified School District, which had 27 locations affected.

An estimated 19, 219 customers were affected by the outage, according to Lauren Bartlett, a spokeswoman for SoCal Edison.

Crews were working to switch customers to other circuits, she said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Traffic lights that are out should be treated as four-way stops, Bartlett wanted remind drivers.
