The sequence of events began about 1:50 a.m., when a deputy saw the man burglarizing a Wienerschnitzel that was closed at the time, said Lt. Alicia Malone of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

When the deputy attempted to stop the man, a chase ensued. The pursuit proceeded through multiple areas including East Los Angeles, Maywood, Bell, and the city of Commerce, where the suspected burglar carjacked a woman outside Steven's Steak & Seafood House in the 5300 block of Stevens Place (map), Malone said. The victim was not injured.

β€œIt was either my life or the car,” the woman told KTLA. β€œI have family to go to. So I decided to just give him my car.”

The man was arrested after the chase finally ended in South El Monte. He was facing charges of carjacking, felony evading and burglary, among others, according to the Sheriff's Department.
