Stray Cat Saves Abandoned Baby From Freezing to Death in Russia

A long-haired tabby cat is being called a hero after finding an an abandoned baby boy in a street and climbing in the box to keep him warm.

In addition to keeping the baby warm in the freezing temperatures, the cat also meowed to draw people’s attention to the boy, the Mirror reports.

Irina Lavrova, 68, was taking out her garbage when she heard the cat, named Masha, meowing near the trash bins.

When she went to check on the cat she discovered the baby boy laying there next to it.

“Masha is a communal cat who everyone takes turns in looking after,” Lavrova said, according to the Mirror. “She is very placid and friendly so when I heard her meowing I thought that perhaps she had she had injured herself because normally she would have come and said hello to me. You can imagine my shock when I saw her lying in a box next to a baby.”

The baby was taken to a hospital where he was declared healthy.

“Everyone in the block is very proud of [Masha] and we have all spoiled her rotten by giving her her favorite food,” Lavrova said.

Police are investigating how the baby wound up abandoned in the street and have launched a search for his mother.
