Gayle Anderson was live in Ontario for the 2015 NPA Grand National Pigeon Show, described by event organizers as the biggest pigeon show of North America. The Grand National Pigeon Show is the crown jewel of pigeon shows in the United States, supported by several dozen specialty pigeon breed clubs and has been attended by thousands of pigeon fanciers over the years. It will hosted by the Los Angeles Pigeon Club, one of the largest and oldest pigeon clubs in the United States. The Los Angeles Pigeon Club, formed in 1911, hosted the show eight times including this one; the last was San Bernardino in 2006.

Nearly 8,000 pedigreed pigeons have been entered into the show by more than 400 exhibitors throughout

United States and Canada; the second most ever. The record is 8,788 in San Bernardino in 1998. Close to 200 breeds will be represented each with a standard of perfection recognized by the NPA for judging purposes. Pigeons are the most diverse, genetically rich bird species on the planet.

The NPA says the pigeon hobby is widely popular throughout the U.S. and world. There will be several dozen specialty clubs represented, visitors from 21 foreign countries, including countries never represented before, and judges from several states and countries.

Former boxing heavyweight champion and known pigeon fancier Mike Tyson is scheduled to open the show with a white pigeon release. Tyson is a well-known pigeon fancier.

The approximately 8,000 pigeons exhibited at this show are competing against their own type and evaluated by an appointed judge selected by its specialty club or the NPA. Pigeons will be awarded champion, best of show and other awards. The primary categories of breeds include performing, exhibition and utility pigeons.

On Saturday, $1,000 in prize money will be awarded to the top five birds in the show.

This show will be attended by exhibitors of all age ranges and gender, ranging from junior fanciers under the age 18 to a pair of 97-year-old master breeders that achieved a lifetime of knowledge and mastery of their breed.
