Firefighters found the 9-year-old boxer, named Carmen, covering the man’s face as a fire roared around them at a house in Goshen Township, WCPO-TV reported.

The man, 33-year-old Ben Ledford, did not survive the blaze, despite what fire officials described as the canine’s heroic efforts to save his life.

“A lot of dogs instinctively know when there’s a crisis going on and so a lot of them do go try to protect their owners,” Dr. Marlo Anderson, a veterinarian, said.

The canine suffered severe lung damage and was being cared for at Cincinnati Care Center after being hooked up to a ventilator.
