A member of the LAPD bomb squad fatally struck a pedestrian while driving his patrol vehicle on duty in Del Rey, Los Angeles Police Department officials said Monday.
The driver was an on-duty member of the LAPD who was driving some sort of patrol vehicle at the time, LAPD Sgt. Ellis confirmed.
“He struck something in the roadway. … Initially he didn’t even realize what he had struck. He went back twice, and passed twice before he actually found the victim on the side of the road,” LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery said.
The driver was "somewhat distraught," Montgomery said.
The conditions during the incident were described as dark and foggy, Montgomery said, adding that there were no sidewalks in the nearby area.
The driver stayed at the scene and the incident was not considered a hit-and-run, an LAPD desk officer said.
A white pickup truck with damage to its hood was visible at the scene, video from Sky5 showed.
