Long Beach police were asking for the public's help Wednesday in locating a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a 55-year-old man in a wheelchair near a gas station.

Jose Guevarra was crossing eastbound on Santa Fe Avenue at Lincoln Street in an unmarked crosswalk Friday night when  he was hit by a vehicle traveling northbound, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

The force of the impact threw Guevarra from the wheelchair and into the street north of the intersection, a Tuesday evening news release from the Police Department stated.

He was critically injured and taken to an area hospital. Guevarra died from his injuries Sunday afternoon.

The driver who hit the victim fled northbound on Santa Fe Avenue, dragging the wheelchair beneath their vehicle until it dislodged when the car turned eastbound on Wardlow Road, police officials said.

The hit-and-run vehicle was described by police as a green sedan, possibly a BMW. They did not provide any details about the driver.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or had information about it was asked to call Long Beach police Detective Sirilo Garcia at 562-570-7355.
