An investigation was underway Wednesday morning after a male infant suffered a”traumatic brain injury” and died, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Family members called 911 Tuesday to report that the baby had been injured inside a residence in the 2300 block of East Avenue J-8 in Lancaster, a Sheriff’s Department’s news release stated.

The baby was rushed to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles where he died following emergency surgery for the brain injury, according to the release.

The death was labeled “suspicious” after the preliminary investigation showed that “family members’ account of how the infant was injured” were “inconsistent with the type of injury the infant sustained,” according to sheriff’s officials.

They added that the investigation was still in its early stages and that the department has not made any arrests.

The infant’s official cause of death was expected to be determined by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

Investigators have not released any further information about the case.
