Two teenagers were being sought Thursday for beating a 73-year-old man and throwing him to the ground repeatedly during a violent street robbery in Santa Ana.

Isidoro Ponce was sitting outside his apartment in the 700 block of N. Mintor just after 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday when he was attacked, according to the Santa Ana Police Department.

Surveillance video showed the teenagers approach Ponce. One them asked to borrow his cellphone, police said.

Then, without warning, the teenager attacked, hitting Ponce and throwing him to the ground before finally ripping the man's beloved gold chain from around his neck, the video showed.

"The victim was wearing a $1,500 gold chain which was given to him by his ex-wife that was sentimental to him," Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

Police were hoping that some might recognize the thieves and turn them in.

"Teenagers picking on a 73-year-old man, taking something he cherishes -- that's pathetic," Bertagna said.
