Man Fatally Shot Near Elementary School in Gardena Area; Investigation Underway

A homicide investigation was underway Wednesday after a man was fatally shot near an elementary school in an unincorporated area of Gardena, authorities said.

Detectives responded to the 3300 block of Marine Avenue (map) just after 5 a.m. to investigate a fatal shooting, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department stated in a news release.

Investigators found the body of an unidentified man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, the news release stated.

Marine Avenue was closed between Lemoli Avenue and Yukon Avenue during the investigation, video from the scene showed.

One person, who did not want to be identified, told KTLA he heard arguing at 2:45 a.m. followed by about four gunshots sometime around 3 a.m.

The body, covered by a white sheet, was still in front of F.D. Roosevelt Elementary School at 9 a.m., video showed.

There was no word on whether anyone was in custody.
