Homicide detectives were investigating a fatal deputy-involved shooting in the San Gabriel Valley on Friday morning, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officials said.
Deputies initially responded to a report that someone had broken into a home in the 800 block of Ashcomb Drive -- located in an unincorporated area of Valinda -- shortly after 1:15 a.m., according to sheriff's Lt. Holly Francisco and a news release from the department.
An earlier news release had said the incident occurred in La Puente.
When they arrived at the location, they were met by a resident who informed them an unknown man was inside the house.
Deputies entered the residence and were met by the man. They gave him verbal commands, but the subject refused to cooperate, the release stated.
At some point, he allegedly reached for a deputy's weapon and was subsequently shot once in the upper torso, officials said in the release.
The unidentified Hispanic man died of his injuries.
No deputies were injured in the shooting. Multiple residents were inside the house at the time of the incident, but also were unharmed, officials said.
A knife was recovered at the scene, the release stated.
The Los Angeles County coroner's office confirmed they would be heading out to the location. Authorities were expecting an investigation at the scene to last until around noon, according to Francisco.
