Offiicals were called to a laundromat in the 5000 block of West El Segundo Boulevard at 7:39 a.m. about the discovery of what appeared to be a fetus, Cheryl Sims of the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

The reported “suspicious item” was found in the garbage bin behind the business, LT. Jim Royer of the Hawthorne Police Department.

Aerial video from Sky5 showed crime scene tape closing off access to the area where several investigators were standing near an open dumpster behind Coast Laundry.

The discovery was later confirmed to be a fetus, which was estimated to be about 15 weeks along in its development, Royer said.

There was no immediate word on the gender of the fetus.

The laundromat is located near Hawthorne High School.
