Shooting in Chino Hills Leaves 1 Dead; Suspect in Custody After Hourslong Standoff With SWAT Team

A person was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon in Chino Hills, and the the suspected shooter was taken into custody after an hourslong standoff with a SWAT team at a home in the city, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Few details were available about the shooting and the subsequent barricade situation, which ended peacefully when the suspect surrendered, the department said on Twitter shortly before 7 p.m.

Deputies initially responded to the 4300 block of Val Verde Avenue as part of a shooting investigation, the agency Tweeted just after 3:30 p.m.

About 4:50 p.m., a tweet from the Sheriff’s Department announced the victim was deceased and homicide investigators were at the scene. Nearby residents were evacuated.

Photos published by the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin showed SWAT team members and at least two armored vehicles in the residential area where the standoff was taking place.

“Armed suspected in custody,” the sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division said on Twitter after the incident was resolved. “Neighborhood safe.”
