A man was hospitalized after being shot by another man late Saturday morning outside the Montclair Place shopping center, authorities said.

The two individuals, who did not know each other, got into an altercation shortly before noon in a parking lot at the mall, located at 5060 Montclair Plaza Lane, said Sgt. John Minook of the Montclair Police Department. Authorities initially said the shooting happened inside the mall.

One of the men brandished a pistol and shot the other man an unknown number of times, according to the sergeant. It was unclear where the wounded person was struck.

The injured man was transported to a hospital with wounds that were not life-threatening, police said. He was expected to be discharged from the facility sometime Saturday.

No other people were threatened by the incident, and the mall’s business hours were not affected, Minook said.

Police were searching for the shooter, described only as a black male adult, who was said to have fled the scene in a newer-model white Chevrolet Silverado. The vehicle may have had paper license plates.
