Officer Tom Carney was on duty and riding his motorcycle southbound on Tapo Canyon Road, at Los Angeles Avenue, when the crash occurred shortly before 5 p.m., according to a statement from Simi Valley Police Department.

As Carney crossed through the intersection, the northbound driver of the small truck “made a left or U-turn directly into the path of the oncoming motorcycle,” the news release said. The officer was thrown from the cycle upon impact.

Carney’s suffered significant head wounds, multiple fractures and internal injuries, the department said. He underwent several hours of surgery Wednesday evening and may require additional operations in the coming weeks.

The driver of the truck, identified as 43-year-old Traci Hobbs of Simi Valley, was not hurt in the collision, the police statement said. Authorities initially gave Hobbs’s age as 53.

Neither drugs nor alcohol contributed to the incident, according to investigators. As of Thursday afternoon, no citations had been issued or arrests made.

The California Highway Patrol is assisting the Police Department in the investigation of the crash.

Anyone with information about the collision was asked to call the CHP’s Moorpark office at 805-553-0800.

Simi Valley police are working to organize a blood drive in support of Carney, a 14-year veteran of the department who served in the Marine Corps. He previously was a member of the Prescott Valley Police Department in Arizona, the news release said.
