Buena Park police on Wednesday released surveillance video showing three armed men surrounding a driver before one of them fatally shot the motorist at a gas station.
The video, which shows 24-year-old Maher Yousef sitting in his car outside a Mobil minimart at 5989 Beach Blvd. on the night of Friday, July 1, was made public in hope that investigators will receive tips identifying the would-be robbers.
Yousef was followed to the gas station by the men and likely targeted because he worked at a check-cashing business, Buena Park police said Saturday.
Yousef stayed in his car — a black sedan — while his passenger went into the minimart, police said.
Then the men approached the parked car and brandished weapons, demanding money. The victim briefly struggled with one of the armed men at the driver’s side window, and then another man reached into the passenger-side door and shot Yousef in the head at close range.
The men got away with nothing, police said. They fled on foot.
A witness, who can be seen in the video, was not hurt.
Yousef, a La Mirada resident, died at a UC Irvine Medical Center. He and his passenger had pulled over because they had a flat tire.
He had seven siblings and was “so kind,” his sister Deana Yousef told KTLA.
"Everyone loved him. Everyone gravitated towards him. He never hurt anybody,” she said. “For something like this to happen to him — I just don’t believe it. Nobody believes it.”
The armed men were all described as black and in their 20s:
- One man is 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a heavy build. He was last seen wearing a brown hoodie, a checkered shirt, dark pants and blue shoes.
- The second suspect is said to be 6 feet 2 inches tall, 200 pounds, with possible facial hair. He wore a striped V-neck T-shirt, jeans and white tennis shoes.
- The third man is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a thin build, wearing a dark hoodie.
