The 15-year-old was pushing the baby in the crosswalk about 4:15 p.m. near the intersection of 133rd Street and Hawthorne Boulevard when they were hit, the Hawthorne Police Department said in a news release.

Responding officers found the two children lying near the crosswalk, police said. The baby was still strapped in the stroller and not breathing.

The driver, Donna Marie Higgins, allegedly fled the scene of the crash, but witnesses followed her and blocked her SUV until police arrived.

The teen suffered from leg injuries and was taken to Harbor UCLA Medical Center in stable condition. The baby was also transported and placed in the intensive care unit, police said.

Higgins was given a field sobriety test before being arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and felony drunk driving.

She was booked into the Hawthorne jail and held on $100,000 bail.
