Navy Commander Booked on Felony Sexual Assault and Attempted Rape Charges

Commander John Neuhart II was in jail Monday after being arrested by San Diego police on suspicion of assault with intent to rape and attempted rape by force.

Authorities said Neuhart was arrested after they responded to a 911 call placed around 3 a.m. by the victim's neighbor after he heard screams coming from her home. When the man approached his neighbor's front door and shouted to ask if she was alright, she said no, according to police.

Officers said the neighbor then stated the police were on their way and the suspect fled across the victim’s backyard into a nearby canyon, where he was arrested.

Law enforcement has since determined that the victim and suspect are acquaintances and both members of the U.S. Navy. The two had run into each other at a downtown San Diego hotel while the victim was with a group of friends, police said.

According to detectives the suspect accompanied the victim when she left the bar to go home. He then allegedly followed her into her house and attempted to sexually assault her.
