Female Pedestrian Killed in South L.A. Hit-and-Run; Driver Sought: Police

A female pedestrian was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while crossing a South Los Angeles street Wednesday morning, police said.

The fatal collision occurred around 5:30 a.m. near West 80th Street and South Western Avenue, in the Manchester Square neighborhood of South L.A.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Liliana Preciado. Police described her as a Hispanic woman in her 60s.

Authorities said she was struck while crossing Western Avenue, although not in a designated crosswalk. Detectives believe she was heading to pick up items from the food bank at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Sky5 aerial video showed a white sheet covering the victim's body, which was on the side of the street near the sidewalk. Multiple LAPD units were also at the scene nearby amid the ongoing investigation.

The male driver fled the scene and was last seen headed southbound on Western, according to LAPD. Police were searching for the vehicle, described as a black Chevy Avalanche with gray trim.
