An Ontario man was arrested late Monday afternoon in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a man in a wheelchair in Pomona late Sunday night, police said.
Officers responded to the 900 block of West Holt Avenue following a report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian in a wheelchair at about 11:12 p.m., according to a news release from the Pomona Police Department.
The victim, 49-year-old Charles Atterberry, was pronounced dead at the scene, the police department sated.
Although authorities had previously described Atterberry as homeless, his sister Latricia Mathis later said he had a loving family he lived with.
The driver fled the scene and arriving officers found the victim on the sidewalk, according to the news release.
The car's license plate, however, was left behind, Pomona Police Department Lt. Eddie Vazquez said. Based on that clue and information from an anonymous witness who later came forward, police identified the suspect as Alejandro Ambriz, a 44-year-old Ontario resident.
Ambriz allegedly obtained the car from a used-car dealership where he worked. He was driving without a valid license at the time of the collision, police said.
After the incident Ambriz called a friend to pick him up and recover the vehicle, which was taken to a body shop in Montclair, according to a police statement.
