Asdru Sierra is a co-founder, lead singer, and musician with the popular and Grammy-winning band Ozomatli. The LA-based band has won Grammys for best Latin rock/alternative and Latin Grammys for best alternative music album. But their music crosses multiple genres. It’s eclectic and sometimes hard to define, but Ozomatli is always interesting. They’re known for lively concerts and the band is always a crowd favorite — or so I thought until this interview. The multi-cultural band members have come up against racist concertgoers in some cities and you’ll hear Asdru talk about how the band dealt with it.

You’ll also hear why Ozomatli band members decided to travel the world as cultural ambassadors for the U.S. State Department despite initial reservations. And how one song in particular has a deeply personal meaning for Asdru.

Asdru is creative and open-minded. He has collaborated on musical and film projects outside of Ozomatli and he wants to do more. I’ve known Asdru for about 10 years and I’ve always found him to be kind and thoughtful and fun. I think that comes through in this interview. I hope you enjoy it.
