SoCal Edison Employee Fatally Struck by Car While Working in Lancaster ID’d

Authorities on Sunday identified the Southern California Edison worker who died after being struck by a car while on the job in Lancaster.

The man was Quartz Hill resident Gerald Joseph Smith, 56, according to Investigator Rudy Molano with the county coroner’s office. The utility worker was hit Friday after the vehicle had crashed into several trees, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department said.

Smith was fixing a power box in a median on Avenue K, west of 20th Street, when a black BMW 740 jumped the curb, deputies said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses said the BMW was traveling at an unknown high speed when the crash occurred.

The driver, a man in his 20s, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition Friday after being retrieved from his car with the jaws of life. His current condition is unknown.

Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash, investigators said.
