Homeless Sex Offender Charged With Violently Raping Woman at Glendale Grocery Store Parking Lot

A homeless man was arrested for allegedly raping and repeatedly punching a homeless woman in the parking lot of a closed grocery store in Glendale,  officials reported Tuesday.

Michael Zinzun, 48, faces one count each of forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, sexual penetration by a foreign object, kidnapping to commit rape and resisting arrest, the District Attorney’s Office announced in a news release.

The victim, a 56-year-old homeless woman, was attacked at about 4 a.m. on Sept. 29 in the 300 block of Los Feliz Road. According to police, the victim was asleep on a bench when Zinzun approached her, started to sexually assault her and threatened to harm her if she didn’t stop screaming, police said.

According to prosecutors, Zinzun dragged the woman away from the bench and grocery store parking lot, and pushed her over the side of a small retaining wall. A witness called 911 and reported the sexual assault in progress, police said.

Responding officers found the woman lying on the ground, half nude with visible injuries,  Glendale police said.

Zinzun fled on foot, but after a short foot pursuit was taken into custody by police.

The victims remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Prosecutors said Zinzun, a registered sex offender out of Pasadena, was convicted in Florida for a sexual assault in 1998 and burglary in 2005, authorities reported.

Detectives said Zinzun may be responsible for other sexual assaults. Anyone with information about Zinzun is asked to call 818-548-4911.

If convicted he faces a  maximum sentence of life in state prison. Zinzun remains behind bars on more than $3.3 million bail.
