Authorities ID Man Fatally Shot by CHP Officer on I-5 in Irvine

A man who was fatally shot by the California Highway Patrol while running up and down lanes of the southbound the 5 Freeway in Irvine was identified Tuesday.

Riverside resident Mauricio Barron, 27, died Monday after a CHP officer responded to drivers’ 911 calls reporting a person in the lanes near Barranca Parkway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officials have not released details on the officer’s contact with Barron or what led to the shooting, and the incident remains under investigation.

Barron had also been hit by a car but was still walking around, authorities said. He was transported to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana where he later died.
