A West Covina councilman pleaded not guilty on Thursday after allegedly driving under the influence and crashing his car in Covina.

Michael Herman Spence, more commonly known as Mike, was charged with one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of a drug.

The 50-year-old was allegedly driving under the influence of an unknown drug on June 12 when he struck a pole with his car near Azusa Avenue and Cypress Street in Covina.

Spence’s attorney stood in for him at his court hearing and gave the not guilty plea.

He faces a maximum possible sentence of six months in county jail if convicted.
