An initial investigation indicates that a Toyota Prius with four people inside was rear-ended by a black Chevrolet Camaro near the Slauson Avenue exit just before 2 a.m.

The vehicles burst into dramatic flames, video from the scene showed.

The Camaro's driver fled on foot, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesperson at the scene.

Three of the four occupants in the Prius were able to escape, but a male passenger in the left rear seat did not get out and died at the scene, according to CHP.

The crash prompted a SigAlert for the closure of all northbound lanes.

The freeway lanes started reopening about 6:45 a.m., video showed. CHP announced the cancellation of the SigAlert just after 7 a.m.

Authorities initially said three cars were believed involved in the crash, but that information changed later in the morning.
