Pomona Police Department officers received a call around 8 p.m. after the child was dropped off by a family member at Pomona Valley Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest, authorities said in a press release.

The boy told police he was in an alleyway in the 800 block of East La Verne Avenue when he heard a gunshot and was struck by a bullet.

Los Angeles County Fire Department Supervisor Michael Pittman said the victim was 12 years old.

A Fire Department helicopter airlifted the child out of the Pomona hospital to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center in stable condition, officials said.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
