The shooting was reported about 2:10 a.m. near the intersection of Lime Avenue and Ninth Street, Long Beach Police Lt. Eric Herzog said.

A man was found in an alley between a house and an apartment with a gunshot wound to his torso, Herzog said.

Firefighters were called to assist the Long Beach Police Department and the man was declared dead at the scene.

People who live in the area and were interviewed by police said they recognize the victim as someone who visits neighbors, Herzog said.

Authorities identified the victim as Manuel Arechiga, 18.

Letty Calderon said Arechiga had been living with her since her husband was killed earlier this year. She said she informed the victim's mother of what happened Tuesday.

"She’s devastated, poor thing,” Calderon said of  Arechiga's mother. “You never expect this to happen, you never expect them to not come home."

The shooting does not appear to be gang-related, Herzog said.

No further details were available about the shooting.
