At least 50 homes were threatened by a brush fire in San Juan Capistrano that grew to 58 acres, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.
The fire was originally heading towards San Juan Hills High School before firefighters made progress containing the blaze.
Homes and schools in the area are no longer threatened, fire officials told KTLA.
The fire began around 11:50 p.m. in the 28000 block of Avenida La Mancha.
More than 120 firefighters, two dozers and two helicopters worked to extinguish the blaze.
The fire is expected to be knocked down within two hours, fire officials said.
