Detectives responded to the 13400 block of Penn Street around 6 a.m. after a citizen called the Whittier Police Department to report a "suspicious" man walking down the street while possibly holding a machete, according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department news release.

Responding officers located the man described in the call and made contact him. While speaking with the man, he allegedly threw a stick at one of the officers, the release stated.

The subject then allegedly lunged at an officer while holding a machete, prompting the officer to open fire, according to the release.
