Gayle Anderson was live in Hollywood where Project Angel Food is preparing Thanksgiving meals for the seriously ill.
During the holiday season, when most of us celebrate with family and friends, many of the clients at Project Angel Food, are alone as they battle critical illness including HIV/AIDS, cancer, kidney failure, congestive heart disease and diabetes. The team of volunteers and chefs at Project Angel Food not only provide healthy, medically tailored meals for these men and women, but also a sense of family as the volunteers and staff prepare and deliver the food with love and support to spread the holiday spirit.
The kitchen will be open on Thanksgiving morning Thursday, November 24 , 2016 6 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. when volunteers and celebrity helpers, including Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin will be preparing the holiday meals for clients. From 11 a.m. to 12 noon the meals will be packaged and prepared for delivery by the volunteers who will make sure hundreds of people are assured of a festive meal in time for Thanksgiving lunch.
Chef Derbeh and his team, along with the nutrition staff have created a delicious hot meal comprising Roasted Turkey + Gravy; Cornbread Stuffing + Gravy; Buttered Corn; Baked Yams with Marshmallow Topping; Cumberland Cranberry Sauce; Mix Green Salad with Garnish (pepperoncini, cherry pepper or cornichon); Pumpkin Pie.
For vegetarians the menu is Vegetarian Ravioli with Sage Butter Sauce; Buttered Corn; Baked Yams with Cinnamon and Brown Sugar; Cumberland Cranberry Sauce; Mixed Green Salad with Garnish (pepperoncini, cherry pepper or cornichon); Pumpkin Pie.
For the past 27 years the mission at Project Angel Food has remained constant, to feed and nourish the sick by delivering healthy meals throughout Los Angeles County to men and women living with life-threatening illness. The original mission was to feed people living with HIV?AIDS it has now expanded to include men and women living with cancer, diabetes, kidney failure and congestive heart disease.
The cost of providing a regular meal for clients is $5and Project Angel Food still prepares more than 10,000 meals a week , and since its inception has provided more than 10 million meals, free of charge to people living with critical illness.
Project Angel Food is a lifeline filling a vital need in all communities, and more than 98% of our clients are living well below the poverty line. The client demographic is 40% Latino, 30% African-American, 21% Caucasian, 5% Asian and 4% other.
Volunteers will be delivering all the meals to clients across Los Angeles County by 2.00 p.m. in time for Thanksgiving lunch.
Also, Project Angel Food is excited to announce a first time offer, fresh holiday pies, made on the premises, available for sale. The Thanksgiving delicious holiday treats include Chef Daniel’s Apple Crumble, Chef John’s Pumpkin, Chef Angel’s choice, a surprise new item, available through November only. The 9 inch pies cost $25.00 each and another first, Project Angel Food is partnering with Lyft and Postmates , who together with Project Angel Food's drivers will provide free delivery on orders of 5 or more.
The Christmas fare comprises Chef Daniel’s Apple Crumble, Chef John’s Pumpkin, and another first, Chef Derbeh’s Fruitcake, available for December only, the cost is $25.00. The same delivery arrangements apply. In addition Chef Juan has perfected a Diabetic Apple Crumble --available for the entire holiday season -- which donors can sponsor for one of Project Angel Food’s 300 Diabetic Clients.
Project Angel Food has a total of 1,400 clients and we are aiming to have a pie sponsored for every one of them. The cost of providing a meal is $5.00 and Project Angel Food still prepares more than 10,000 meals a week and since its inception has provided more than 10 million meals, free of charge to people living with critical illness.
