A good Samaritan was shot and killed while trying to stop an apparent domestic violence incident in a Wal-Mart parking lot on Black Friday in San Antonio, according to the city’s police chief.

The shooting, which also left two other women injured, happened outside the Wal-Mart located in the 1400 block of Vance Jackson Road, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said late Friday afternoon.

The incident began when a driver spotted a man assaulting a woman “pretty badly” in the parking lot, according to McManus.

As the man had the woman by her hair, the good Samaritan drove up and tried to stop the abuse.

“All he verbally said was, ‘Take your hands off of her.’ At that point, the assailant opened fire on him and started shooting,” McManus said at a news briefing.

The good Samaritan was struck in the neck and died at the scene, according to the police chief, who did not identify the victim.

“You have to give credit to the man for trying to intervene – I think anyone would do that. Unfortunately, this man [the assailant] was too eager to shoot,” McManus said.

A woman who was further down in the parking lot was also hit by the gunfire and taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A third victim, who was in the good Samaritan’s car, was hit by shrapnel. Her condition was not immediately known.

The alleged gunman has been taken into custody, the police chief said. McManus added that he believes “there will be murder charges” in the case.

The woman who was initially being abused — described only as the assailant’s partner — was able to escape.

No other information about the shooting was immediately provided.
