Corona teacher Summer Hansen appears in court on Sept. 12, 2013.

Summer Hansen, 31, was charged last month with 16 counts that accuse her of sending naked pictures of herself to teen students and having sex in her classroom, among other places.

Hansen was a special education teacher at Centennial High School in Corona.

None of her five alleged victims — all under the age of 18 — were her students, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office said in announcing the charges last month. But they were students at Centennial High.

Hansen and her defense attorney, David Cohn, say that the boys’ allegations are false.

“Do teenagers lie? Sure they do. Do they say something and then really believe it and move forward? Yes,” Cohn said. “These boys all know each other. If they didn’t know each other and had no connection to each other, then you would start to wonder.”

Appearing at Riverside Superior Court, Hansen smiled as she came into the courtroom Thursday.

The prosecutor asked the judge to order her to stay away from any children “other than her own,” but Cohn got the request narrowed before it was approved by the judge.

“We don’t have any objection to the teaching part of it, but there are family friends, relatives, things of that nature,” her attorney said.

She allegedly had sex with students in her classroom, in a utility room at the school, in a car and at a student’s home.

The charges against Hansen include unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, unlawful oral copulation with a minor and sending harmful matter to a minor. She faces up to 13 years in state prison.

The investigation began when Corona police were notified by the Corona-Norco Unified School District of a possible inappropriate relationship between Hansen and a former student.

Hansen was then placed on administrative leave and, after her arrest, was allowed to post bail.

Corona police were notified by school district officials in mid-June about a possible inappropriate relationship between Hansen and a former student.

The alleged crimes took place between May 2012 and May 2013, according to investigators.

The acts allegedly took place in Hansen’s classroom, in a utility room at the school, in her vehicle and at one alleged victim’s home.

The district placed Hansen on administrative leave and Corona police began their investigation, leading to Hansen’s arrest.

“I really hope it’s not true, becasue that would be really sad,” student Marissa Byers said. “Especially since it’s a special ed teacher — that kind of hits a little bit harder.”

“I’ve seen her around and I heard she was a really nice lady,” student Austin Farris said. “Just to hear something like that is really almost heartbreaking,” he added.

Hansen was free on $150,000 bail. If convicted as charged, she could face up to 13 years in state prison.

Hansen’s attorney has maintained that his client did nothing wrong.

Corona police as well as school district officials said that a background check was performed when Hansen was hired, and it came up clean.

Summer Michelle Hansen, 31, of Corona, was arrested following an investigation that began June 18, according to a news release from the Corona Police Department.

The married mother of three teaches special education at Centennial High School.

Police were notified by the Corona Norco Unified School District of a possible inappropriate relationship between Hansen and a now-former student.

Investigators discovered that there were several possible victims under the age of 18 who allegedly had sexual contact with Hansen while on campus, police said.

She was arrested on suspicion of multiple counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and oral copulation of a minor, Corona police Sgt. Brent Nelson said.

The district has placed the teacher on leave, according to CNUSD Superintendent Tom Pike.

“All teachers undergo a thorough background check prior to employment, including clearance from the FBI and Department of Justice,” Pike said.

Parents who were attending after-school activities on Thursday had strong reactions to the news of Summers’ arrest.

“It surprises me that any 31-year-old adult, married woman is having sex with a child, teacher or otherwise,” said parent Angela Thompson.

“Give her fair chance to defend herself, and if that is the case it’s gonna be a shame,” another parent, Khoi Pham, said.

The investigation was ongoing, police said. Investigators were looking into the possibility that there may have been additional victims.
