The husband of Montebello Mayor Christina Cortez has been charged with selling methamphetamine blocks away from a local middle school, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office announced Thursday.

Ruben Guerrero, 44, faces six felony counts for dealing and transporting the drug, and he could face up to 11 years in state prison, the DA’s office stated.

Prosecutors alleged in a court document that Guerrero sold methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of Montebello Intermediate School multiple times throughout September and October.

Guerrero was first taken into custody on Oct. 17 at his Montebello home, which he owns with Cortez, according to the Los Angeles Times. He was released the next day on $60,000 bail.

Guerrero’s arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 4. Prosecutors will request that his bail be set at $120,000.

Ruben Guerrero, 44, was taken into custody Thursday as he left his home in the 1500 block of Los Angeles Avenue, according to a press release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Detectives searched the home in the San Gabriel Valley city, which Guerrero owns with Cortez, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Authorities also searched a second house in the neighborhood, which belongs to the couple’s grandparents, neighbors told KTLA 5.

Guerrero was booked at the East Los Angeles sheriff’s station for sales of drugs near a school, according to the Sheriff’s department. He was later released on $60,000 bail.

Two homes were raided in Montebello early Thursday, including one where the city’s mayor reportedly lives, and her husband was taken into custody on suspicion of methamphetamine sales.

Guerrero is Cortez’s husband and has been involved in alleged threats against a city councilman, the newspaper reported.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department detectives searched two homes in the San Gabriel Valley city, one in the 1500 block and another in the 1600 block of Los Angeles Avenue.

Other than Guerrero, no one else at the homes was “implicated in the sale of narcotics,” the sheriff’s department stated in a news release.

Guerrero was booked at the East Los Angeles sheriff’s station for sales of methamphetamine and sales of a narcotics near a school. He was later released on $60,000 bail.
