LAKE FOREST, Calif. (KTLA) — The gun used by Pastor Rick Warren’s son to commit suicide was unregistered.

The Saddleback Church pastor tweeted Thursday that the gun was purchased on the internet.

Warren issued an emotional statement to his congregation on Saturday that paid tribute to his 27-year-old son, who he said battled mental illness his whole life.

Warren said his son took his own life in a “momentary wave of despair.”

Orange County Sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino said an autopsy conducted on Monday found that Warren had died at around 10 a.m. on Friday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Warrens have two other adult children, Amy and Josh, as well as four grandchildren.

The elder Warren is a world-famous evangelist and the bestselling author of “The Purpose-Driven Life.”

He delivered the invocation at President Obama’s inauguration in 2008.

LAKE FOREST, Calif. (KTLA) — Family, friends and parishioners of Pastor Rick Warren mourned the loss of his son, Matthew Warren, Sunday morning at Saddleback Church.

Matthew, 27, died Saturday after battling depression for much of his life, according to a statement released by the pastor.

“Today after a fun evening together with Kay and me, in a momentary wave of despair at his home, he took his own life,” Warren said.

He described Matthew as a “kind, gentle and compassionate man” with a “brilliant intellect” who was sensitive to the needs of others.

“Kay and I often marveled at his courage to keep moving in spite of his relentless pain.”

“I’ll never forget how, many years ago, after another approach had failed to give relief, Matthew said, ‘Dad, I know I’m going to heaven. Why can’t I just die and end this pain?’ But he kept going for another decade.”

“Kay and I’ve been privileged to hold your hands as you faced a crisis or loss,” the statement said. “Today we need your prayers for us.”
