WHITTIER, Calif. (KTLA) — A man was killed and a female accomplice was arrested after a pursuit that ended with a fake hostage standoff in Whittier Sunday morning.

It all began around midnight when police tried to stop a stolen SUV near Telegraph Road and Pioneer Boulevard.

The driver began driving erratically in the wet weather and the pursuit was called off.

A short time later, the SUV — a black Jeep — was spotted in the area of Washington and Norwalk boulevards.

The SUV crashed through a fence at the Chossier Street cul-de-sac and ended up in the middle of Norwalk Boulevard.

The suspects fled on foot into a nearby neighborhood, firing at police as they ran.

Residents were kept from the area for over seven hours while an L.A. County team searched for the suspects.

The pair was eventually found hiding in a garage in the 7600 block of Norwalk Boulevard.

Police initially thought a male suspect was holding a woman hostage, but it turned out that both were suspects, and the woman was only pretending to be a hostage.

At one point during the “hostage” drama, the man released the female suspect to authorities. He then shot at deputies, who returned fire.

The suspect was struck and was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No deputies or bystanders were hurt.

Authorities said a weapon was recovered from the female suspect, who is from Colorado and has been in jail before. The suspects’ identities were not immediately released.

The SUV had been reported stolen out of Lakewood, Colo., police said. It had license plates taken in Wyoming, and California plates were also found inside the vehicle.

Police have captured two pursuit suspects after a long and arduous search in a Whittier neighborhood Sunday morning.

KTLA’s Doug Kolk has the update to the 7-hour saga.
