Ford Driving Skills

Gayle Anderson was live in Inglewood where the Ford Motor Company Fund and the Governors Highway Safety Association are starting the 10th year of bringing “Ford Driving Skills for Life Program” directly to new young drivers across the U.S. through a variety of activities. The Ford company says the “Ford Driving Skills for Life Program” is the most comprehensive, award winning teen safe driving program in the United States and has trained more than 550,000 new drivers around the globe through online and professional hands-on driver instruction.

 Teens between the ages of 15 and 19 in the Los Angeles area, having a valid driver’s license permit, can participate in the program. Parents and educators can participate as well.

Teens will drive specially equipped vehicles on closed road courses under the supervision of professional instructors to improve their skills in the key areas that contribute to over 60% of teen crashes and fatalities: hazard recognition, vehicle handling and speed/space management. A special course will also be dedicated to driver distraction. The program allows teen drivers to experience potentially threatening situations in a controlled, safe environment.

 Nearly 3,000 teens are killed on American roads each year, according to the most recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In 2010, there were 245 teen motor vehicle fatalities in California alone. Ford Motor Company Fund, Governors Highway Safety Association and a panel of safety experts developed Ford Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) to address this issue. The comprehensive program focuses on teaching skills necessary for safe driving and often not fully understood by new drivers.
