Special Olympics Summer Games Preview

Gayle Anderson was live in Long Beach with a preview of the 2013 Special Olympics Summer Games at Cal State Long Beach this weekend Saturday, June 8th and Sunday, June 9th. This event is FREE and open to the public.

The Summer Games feature six competitions, including aquatics, track & field, basketball, bocce, golf and gymnastics. More than 1,100 athletes and 300 coaches  travel from all over Southern California to participate in this competition. In addition, more than 3,000 volunteers and 1,500 local dignitaries, sponsors and spectators will be in attendance.

The Opening Ceremony is Saturday morning at the Track Stadium followed by the Rafer Johnson Breakfast with Champions at 11:30 a.m. at the Student Union Ballroom. (Tickets are required for the Breakfast with Champions event, which is now sold out.) Competitions are held all day from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The Closing Ceremony is Sunday afternoon at the Expo Park Stage. Also, there will be Award Ceremonies at all sports events. Time varies by sport.

Featured exhibits include games, live entertainment, community exhibits and a Family Pavilion, where families can relax between competitions. Also, there will be free health screenings for Special Olympics athletes. Visitors and participants can shop for Special Olympics souvenirs and merchandise at Rafer’s Boutique.

The 2013 Special Olympics Summer Games is sponsored by Vons Foundation as well as KTLA 5, Mattel, Mitchell E. Gordon Memorial Fund, Lionsgate/Summit Entertainment, Toyota, The Walt Disney Company, and the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Special Olympics Southern California offers year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Nearly 12,000 athletes in 11 Southern California Counties train and compete in 12 Olympic-type summer and fall sports. There is no cost for athletes to participate in Special Olympics.
