Scott, 19, was initially charged with two counts of murder, plus one count of attempted murder.

On Tuesday, prosecutors announced that based on newly discovered evidence, they could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Scott committed the charged crimes, according to a statement from the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors had alleged that Scott went to an apartment on Compton Boulevard to confront his ex-girlfriend, Crystallyn Nguyen, and her new boyfriend, 22-year-old Datwan Henderson.

Scott was accused of shooting the pair along with Henderson’s 64-year-old grandmother, Dora Lee Dawson.

Nguyen and Dawson were killed.

The crime remains under investigation by the Inglewood Police Department, according to the statement.

Justin Marquis Scott, a Compton resident, was charged with two counts of murder, plus one count of attempted murder, and could potentially face the death penalty, the DA’s office said in a news release.

The slaying occurred around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday inside an apartment on the 11700 block of Compton Boulevard, according to Inglewood Police Department Lt. Jackie Layne.

Prosecutors allege that Scott came to the apartment to confront his ex-girlfriend, Crystallyn Nguyen, and her new boyfriend, 22-year-old Datwan Henderson.

Scott allegedly shot the pair and Henderson’s 64-year-old grandmother, Dora Lee Dawson, who intervened and tried to protect her grandson, according to prosecutors. Inglewood police said earlier in the week that Dawson was 68.

Scott was first detained by police Wednesday as a person of interest in the shooting. His arraignment is set for Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Los Angeles Superior Court, authorities said.

The shooting occurred just before 1 p.m. Tuesday in the 11700 block of Crenshaw Boulevard, according to the Inglewood Police Department.

On Wednesday afternoon, Justin Marquis Scott, a 19-year-old from Compton, was taken into custody, Inglewood police announced Wednesday evening.

Scott is thought to be the ex-boyfriend of Crystallyn Nguyen, 18, who was killed along with Dora Lee Dawson, 68, police said in a news release.

Datwan Henderson, 22, was in critical condition with two gunshot wounds.

The investigation was continuing, but police said it’s believe the shooter approached Henderson at the rear of his home and an altercation occurred.

The gunman produced a gun and chased Henderson into the apartment, where Henderson, Dawson and Nguyen were shot, according to the police news release.

All three victims had been transported to the hospital Tuesday in critical condition.

A man on the scene of the shooting Tuesday told KTLA that Dawson was Henderson’s grandmother.

The man, Shawn Williams, said Dawson was his own mother-in-law, and he speculated that the older woman had “got caught in the middle” of a conflict over Crystallyn, whom witnesses said went by “Asia” and was dating Henderson.

Three people were in critical condition after being shot when gunfire erupted in Inglewood Tuesday, according to police, and a witness said two of the victims later died.

Inglewood Shooting

Three people were reportedly shot in Inglewood on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013.

The shooting happened just before 1 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 11700 block of Crenshaw Boulevard, according to Inglewood Police Department Lt. Jackie Layne.

Two men and a woman were shot and were in critical condition, Layne said.

In contrast to police reports at the scene of the shooting, a man who identified himself as a relative told KTLA the victims were an older woman, and a younger man and younger woman who were dating. He said the two women had been killed.

Shawn Williams said one of those killed was his mother-in-law, and he speculated that there was a conflict with an ex-boyfriend.

Perhaps the older woman got “caught up in the middle of it, trying to stop what was going on,” Williams said.

A Los Angeles County Fire Department official initially said a child was among those wounded.
