Sunset Strip Music Festival

Gayle Anderson was live in West Hollywood with a preview of the 6th annual 2013 Sunset Strip Music Festival (SSMF) Saturday, August 3rd.  Saturday’s street fest will be headlined by Linkin Park, the two-time Grammy Award-winning rock band. The street fest will also include an artist autograph tent, food trucks, a beer garden and interactive experiences. A portion of the street fest’s ticket sales will go towards, Music for Relief, the nonprofit organization started by Linkin Park to support disaster relief and the prevention of natural disasters through various environmental programs.

The Sunset Strip is a 1.6 mile section of Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood that offers restaurants, hotels, music venues, nightclubs, and upscale retail shopping. The Strip has a long history as an entertainment destination. In the 1920s, the Strip was located outside the city limits of Los Angeles and outside the jurisdiction of the LAPD, which allowed it to flourish as an entertainment and gambling hot spot for Hollywood celebrities and 1920s-era gangsters. Since its beginnings, the Strip has been the center of nightlife and music in Los Angeles providing the backdrop for the L.A. music scene in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. The Sunset Strip Music Festival helps commemorate the Strip’s musical past and its street festival ensures that it remains a key destination for today’s most popular and up and coming bands. For more information about the history of the Sunset Strip, visit their website.

Every year during the two days before the Saturday street festival, all venues on the Strip host secret and not-so secret parties. On Thursday, August 1st, the Sunset Strip Music Festival honors Joan Jett with a tribute ceremony followed by a performance by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts at the House of Blues Sunset. Joan Jett is the 2013 Sunset Music Strip Festival honoree and will accept the Elmer Valentine award at the tribute ceremony, which honors her career and history on the Sunset Strip. Admission to this event is only available with a VIP 3-day pass. On Friday, August 2nd, visit the Jack Daniels Experience stage for a SSMF pre-fest party featuring performances by Franky Perez & the Truth, Jessica Childress, Family Wagon, and Exist Elsewhere. This event is FREE and open to all ages. Performances begin at 7 PM and continue through 11 PM. For more information, visit their website.

In addition to Linkin Park, the two main outdoor stages Saturday will feature performances by AWOLNATION, Wale, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Logic, Slick Rick/ Doug E. Fresh, Asher Roth, Finch, and Street Drum Corps. Alongside these outdoor stages on the Sunset Strip, several clubs will have full lineups of bands including The Roxy, Whisky A Go-Go, and the Viper Room, which will have an outdoor stage. The lineup includes performances by Warren G, 7Lions, Bizarre Ride Live featuring Fatlip & Slimkid3, Orgy, Hunter Valentine, Julien-K, Andy Clockwise, Egyptian Lover, Smile Empty Soul, Terraplane Sun, Stolen Babies, UpRooted, The Active Set, Sabrosa Purr, The Dreaming, Sad Robot, Girl on Fire, The Last Internationale, Battle Tapes, The Diamond Light, Raheem Cohen and more.

Music for Relief is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has raised over $5 million for survivors of multiple disasters across four continents including the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, China’s Wenchuan earthquake, a cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe and the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Music for Relief also supports environmental programs as a means of disaster risk mitigation including the planting of over 1 million trees to help reduce global warming. The organization was recently recognized by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon for the Download to Donate program to raise funds and awareness in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake.

Based in Los Angeles, Music for Relief has worked locally to reforest burn areas following a wildfire in Sylmar, provided donated water bottles for wildfire first responders and supplies for families who lost homes in wildfires. Earlier this month, Music for Relief volunteers helped plant community gardens in Inglewood. This project was a collaboration with Do Good Bus and the Social Justice Learning Institute. The goal of the event and gardens is to provide fresh produce for families living in Inglewood, increasing access to and consumption of fruits and vegetables among youth and their families who lack affordable and accessible healthy food choices. The produce is harvested and shared with the entire community. The largest of these community gardens is at Queens Park.
