Michael Rodney Kane, 46, allegedly murdered his wife, Michelle Ann Kane, 43, on Saturday morning outside a house where she was staying with a friend.

Kane was arrested on Monday morning at a motel in Joshua Tree.

According to LAPD documents, Michelle had previously sought police protection against Michael.

She filed a restraining order against him, which he reportedly violated on the night before her death.

Police were called when a man in a baseball cap who resembled Kane smashed the windows of her townhouse.

The couple’s two young children were staying with their mother at the friend’s house.

They were not hurt and were in the custody of relatives, authorities said.

Los Angeles police officials said Monday they did what they could to protect a woman who investigators said was hunted down by her estranged husband at a friend’s home and stabbed to death on a quiet West Hills street.

Officers with the Topanga Area station took two reports five hours apart in which the victim, Michelle Ann Kane, 43, said Michael Rodney Kane had broken the law, first by violating a temporary restraining order and then by vandalizing her home, police officials said.

LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith said officers urged Kane to get out of her home and immediately call 911 if she encountered her husband, a Tarzana elementary school teacher.

“Our officers were very diligent in documenting all of the incidents that were brought to our attention,” Smith said. “Our officers made a great effort to protect the victim, but the law limits what we can do.”

The LAPD was alerted that he might go to a relative’s house in Yucca Valley.

They served a search warrant at the home on Sunday night, but did not find the suspect.

Their investigation led them to the motel in Joshua Tree, where Kane was apprehended without incident.

Kane had “multiple injuries,” according to police.

It was unclear if they were sustained during the alleged homicide or after.

He was taken to a Desert High Medical Center for treatment and then transported to the LAPD’s Topanga Station.

He was booked on suspicion of first-degree murder at the Van Nuys jail.
