Rose Parade Preview- Public Storage and eHarmony

Gayle Anderson was live in Pasadena to begin her series of reports previewing what’s new and happening with the Rose Parade Floats at the 125th Rose Parade presented by Honda Wednesday, January 1st, 2014 at 8 a.m.

This year’s theme, “Dreams Come True” features a spectacular display of floral floats, marching bands, and high stepping equestrian units. The Rose Parade began in 1890 when members of Pasadena’s Valley Hunt Club covered their horse drawn carriages with fresh cut flowers from their garden in celebration of the mild winter weather of the West. Today, the Rose Parade’s breathtaking floats tout the world’s rare and exotic flowers and showcase the best in animated technology.

Curbside viewing of the 2014 Rose Parade in designated areas is FREE and available first-come, first-served. Pasadena city ordinance allows the occupancy of curbside space along the parade route beginning at noon on the day before the parade. Grandstand tickets are available through Sharp Seating Company, the official grandstand seating provider, through Tuesday, December 31st. Every person, regardless of age, must have a ticket to sit in the grandstands. However, if a child is two years of age or younger, he/she may sit on an adult’s lap. If not seated on an adult’s lap, each child must have a ticket. For tickets, please call (626) 795-4171 or visit their website.

The Rose Parade, along with the Rose Bowl Game are part of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, a celebration more than a century old of flowers, music, and sports held annually on New Year’s Day. The Tournament is more than just a parade and football game. It’s America’s New Year Celebration, a greeting to the world on the first day of the year, and a salute to the community spirit and love of pageantry that have thrived in Pasadena for more than a century. The Tournament of Roses Association, a volunteer organization dedicated to presenting an internationally recognized New Year’s celebration, supplies 935 volunteer members who contribute about 80,000 hours of combined manpower each year. Each volunteer is assigned to one of 35 committees, with responsibilities ranging from selecting parade participants to directing visitors on New Year’s Day, to serving hamburgers to band members at the end of the parade route, to giving presentations about the Tournament to community groups. Nicknamed “White Suiters” because of the distinctive white uniform every volunteer wears, these community-spirited men and women give up their evenings, weekends and holidays to ensure the success of the Parade and Game. A small full-time staff provides support and continuity to the volunteer organization.

Public float viewing is held rain or shine at three locations: at the Rosemont Pavilion and Brookside Pavilion, located across from the Rose Bowl Stadium, and the Rose Palace in Pasadena. The Rosemont Pavilion is located at 700 Seco Street in Pasadena. Accessible to disabled visitors, Brookside Pavilion is located at Lot I on the south side of the Rose Bowl Stadium. Today, Gayle visited the PUBLIC STORAGE Rose Parade float, “Adventures in Space. ”  This is the company’s first ever float in the Tournament of Roses®, which offers a playful pun on the company’s stock in trade. Titled, “Adventures in Space,” the design features a trio of fun loving extraterrestrials steering a gigantic spacecraft through the streets of Pasadena. For the aliens, discovering life on planet Earth is a dream come true. The friendly visitors eagerly introduce themselves to the Earthlings lining the parade route. There’s more than meets the eye to this inventive design. The animated entry has an exciting surprise in store for parade audiences. Stay tuned for the big reveal New Year’s Day!

Designed by Paradiso Parade Floats, “Adventures in Space” measures 22’-45’ height, 18’-26’ width and has a length of 55’-100’. A vast array of flowers give this float its technicolor appearance. 35,000 individually applied lime green button chrysanthemums create the aliens’ glowing green complexions. The design incorporates a vivid spectrum of rose varieties including Miracle, Voodoo, Hot Lady, Topaz, High and Magic, Super Green and Cool Water. Over 50,000 carnations in neon hues decorate the fanciful spacecraft.

PUBLIC STORAGE built its first self-storage facility in 1972. Today, it operates over 2,200 unique and diverse company-owned locations in the United States and Europe, totaling more than 142 million net rentable square feet of real estate. Its PS Business Parks interest adds another 28 million(approx.) rentable square feet of commercial and industrial space. Based on number of tenants, Public Storage is among the largest landlords in the world.

Gayle also showed everyone the new eHarmony Rose Parade Float.  Music legend Natalie Cole will be featured on its float for the 2014 Rose Parade. The nine-time Grammy award-winning artist will be singing one of her iconic songs, “This Will Be” along with new songs from her Billboard Latin Pop Album chart-topping CD Natalie Cole en Español.

In keeping with this year’s parade theme, “Dreams Come True”, eHarmony has named its float “Everlasting Love”, honoring the mission of the company’s founder, Dr. Neil Clark Warren – to help everyone find their “Everlasting Love”.

“Having been a member of the Pasadena-area community for over 40 years, it brings me great joy to be part of the Rose Parade and to have the wonderful, talented Natalie Cole perform on our float,” said Dr. Warren. “At eHarmony, we believe there is a meaningful, fulfilling relationship out there for everyone, and we are thrilled to bring that hope and promise to the national audience that waits for this event every year. We are proud to be part of the Rose Parade.”

“Growing up in Southern California, I have always enjoyed watching this legendary parade,” commented Cole. “eHarmony is about finding your soul mate and I am so thrilled that they have decided to use the lyrics of my first hit, ‘This Will Be (An Everlasting Love),’ as the name of their first float ever in the Rose Parade.”

Inspired by both a growing passion for the timeless romanticism of the great Latin music composers and the bilingual recording legacy of her father, Natalie Cole recently released her first Spanish language album “Natalie Cole en Español.” Recorded with lush arrangements and stunning attention to detail, the album has seen a new generation of music fans embrace these timeless standards and quickly propel the release to the top of Billboard’s Latin Pop Albums chart for nine weeks, the longest run of any artist in 2013. Wanting to bring these special songs to live audiences, Natalie Cole has added several of the tracks to her concert repertoire and will be performing them on the eHarmony float.

The Phoenix Decorating Company has partnered with eHarmony to create the float, bringing its 31 years of experience imagining and building floats that reflect the sponsor’s vision. The Phoenix Decorating Company is the winner of 230 Rose Parade awards.
