Snow falling at Bear Mountain

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) — A set of storms will move through the region through early next week, bringing wet weather to the Southland and snow in the mountains.

Scattered showers will remain in the forecast throughout the day on Thursday.

About a quarter-inch to a half-inch of rain is expected in coastal and valley areas, with a half-inch to one-and-a-half inches in the foothills and mountains.

A winter weather advisory will remain in effect until 4 p.m. Thursday for the mountains of Los Angeles, Ventura, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

Snow levels are expected to drop to 3,500 feet on Thursday.

Elevations above 5,000 feet are expected to get four to eight inches of snow, with up to a foot falling at the highest peaks.

Big Bear has already received about two to three inches of snow. The area is expected to get three to seven inches of fresh powder throughout the day Thursday.

Big Bear Mountain ski resort is open, with two lifts in operation, and will have man-made snow in addition to natural powder. Snow Summit resort could open in a few days if weather permits.

Snow in the local mountains could impact Interstate 5 through the Grapevine, Highway 2 through the San Gabriel Mountains and Highway 33 through the Ventura Mountains.

The California Highway Patrol said there was light snow falling in the Grapevine Thursday morning, but no closures were issued.

Showers will persist on Thursday, with another round of rain and snow expected on Friday into Friday night, according to the National Weather Service.

Then, there’s another chance of rain and snow by Saturday night into Sunday morning. Highs will remain cooler than normal into early next week.
