Woman Pleads Not Guilty in Toddler’s Chili Powder Death

chili-powderAPPLE VALLEY, Calif. (KTLA) — A 21-year old woman pleaded not guilty Thursday to fatally poisoning her boyfriend’s 2-year-old daughter with chili powder.

Amanda Sorensen is been charged with first degree murder and child abuse causing death.

Authorities were called to the 20000 block of Cayuga Road in Apple Valley on a report of a child suffering from a seizure after ingesting chili powder.

The toddler, Joileen Garcia, died at a hospital, deputies said.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of the girl’s death.
Sorensen is being held on $1 million bail and is scheduled to return to court Jan. 17.
