DUARTE, Calif. — It’s a special day for one of the medical centers at the forefront in the fight against cancer.

The City of Hope is expanding thanks to a very special gift from a local family.

A flurry of entertainers and performers filled the City of Hope’s campus Wednesday in honor of their centennial birthday and to kick off the groundbreaking of the Kaplan Family Pavilion.

Sharing a 100th birthday with the City of Hope is Rosalie Kaplan whose family has made significant contributions by donations, serving on various committees and boards.

KTLA5 Reporter Carolyn Costello spoke with Kaplan about her part in the City of Hope.

“You know when you give someone hope that is down, you have really made a person,” said Kaplan.

The City of Hope’s new 8,000-square-foot expansion in honor of the Kaplan family is breaking ground this month and expected to open January 2014.

Carolyn Costello has the details.
