VAN NUYS, Calif. — A passenger was killed and the driver badly injured in a single car crash early Saturday morning.

The deadly wreck happened around 1:30 a.m. on Van Nuys Boulevard near Friar Street.

The car was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control, according to police officers.

The vehicle jumped a curb and hit a palm tree before slamming into a storefront.

The passenger died on impact.  The driver was ejected from the vehicle.

Alcohol was likely a factor in the crash, investigators said.

The 22-year-old driver was booked for manslaughter after being released from the hospital.

Meanwhile marijuana is illegal. How many bloody automobile wrecks are caused by weed in comparison to alcohol?

Why do we ignore the obvious?

Should be murder. Not manslaughter. People know exactly what they are doing, the condition they are in and possible deadly outcome, while drinking and driving.

So many young adults drink excessively & then drive. Apparently, they just don't get it. You can drink, but please don't get behind the wheel of a car. it's really that simple.

We live in a society that glorifies alcohol and arrests people for marijuana. This is the result. I guess that checkpoint in North Hollywood missed this driver. How many people were arrested at the checkpoint for being technically over the limit? All the resources are tied up in that, raising money for the city. While this jerk drives around Van Nuys like a maniac drunk off his butt and kills a passenger. Good job piggies! I guess it's hard. They would have to drive around and observe. Uses too much brain power. They can only handle making a check point. That's their speed. That's what they can understand.

Well we have here another case where someone got behind the wheel intoxicated, and a person was killed. Unfortunate accident that could have been prevented, had there been a alcohol detection device installed that would have disabled the vehicle for 24 hours. Black boxes are coming, WHY not have alcohol detection with these. All newer vehicles have a computer, or brain as its called. Where are the brains of our Government. Once again a alcohol detction device would have disabled the vehicle and this latest victum would be home safe. Please push for legistration to have alcohol detection and disabling installed in EVERY registered vehicle. Seat belts save lives and alcohol detecton and disabling will save lives too. Sign me Pist
