CASTAIC, Calif (KTLA) — The California Highway Patrol has re-opened the Grapevine after both sides were closed for several hours Wednesday morning due to snow and ice.
Officers began escorting traffic on the northbound side around 9:30 a.m. Escorts started on the southbound side shortly after.
The Grapevine had been shut down for about three hours before conditions improved enough for officials to reopen the corridor.
Meantime, in Kern County, low snow levels forced the closure of Highway 58 between Mojave and Bakersfield around 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Hundreds of cars had to be escorted off the highway in Tehachapi, and some motorists were actually trapped in the snow.
Snow plows were dispatched to help the stranded drivers, Caltrans said. Highway 58 remained closed on Wednesday morning.
Snow and ice also made for treacherous driving conditions overnight on the I-15 through the Cajon Pass.
The roadway was closed around 1 a.m. just north of the 138 and south of Oak Hills so Caltrans crews could clear the snow. It was re-opened about 15 minute later, despite sporadic snowfall.
Caltrans crews and the CHP were using salt to de-ice the road, and conditions remained difficult at higher elevations.
A KTLA reporter witnessed a multi-vehicle pile-up at Oak Hills early Wednesday morning.
Big Bear received about 12 to 14 inches of fresh snow overnight, and snow showers were expected throughout the morning on Wednesday.
Mountain High Resort reported five to seven inches of fresh snow.
All schools in the Snowline School District were closed due to icy road conditions and inclement weather.
School was also canceled on Wednesday for all Rim of the World Unified schools and all Bear Valley Unified schools due to inclement weather.
Chains were being required on all routes in the San Bernardino and Riverside County mountains.
The CHP said that vehicles without chains will be turned away, with the exception of four-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels.

Much ado about nothin' and me see no real rain coming at all.
News must be slow or they cannot find anything truly newsworthy to talk about or…the news just trying to get those of us who can think about the going's on in the world thinking about things that really do not matter, such as what are the politicians really doing these days to make our lives more miserable…?

KTLA is on the Grapevine and witnesses a small pileup which is captured in video.
This is what happens when drivers' are distracted by news crews on the side of the freeways.
Is there really a need for a new crew to be next to a freeway? I think we all know what traffic looks like.
What is it with this need to be next to freeways when telling a story on freeways?

So nice to see Wendy on tv………………Wendy come back to doing the news on the weekend, you and Chris are a good team.

Wish we could have sent KTLA video of the white-out blizzard like conditions and winds near Frazier Mountain and the Grapevine. Crazy weather we've never seen before. Snow drifts 4 and 5 feet high in a matter of an hour from the driving winds. It looks all calm down in Castaic. I can tell you thats not the case. Be grateful Highway Patrol stopped you and is providing escorts.
