Off-Duty Costa Mesa Officer Killed in Crash Identified

COSTA MESA, Calif. (KTLA) — The Costa Mesa Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own, who died in a crash while off-duty.

officer-crash-picThe officer has been identified by department officials as Det. Michael Delgadillo, a 32-year veteran of the force.

The accident happened around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday at Newport Boulevard and Bristol Street, right under the 55 Freeway.

The off-duty officer was reportedly alone in his vehicle when he slammed into a concrete pillar beneath the freeway.

He was transported to Western Medical Center in Sana Ana, where he died in surgery.

Meantime, an investigation into the crash is now underway.

Police are interviewing witnesses, and some reports say speeding may have been a factor.

Newport Beach police are assisting with the investigation.
