MARYSVILLE, Calif. (KTLA) –Two people are dead after a crash at a race track Marysville, about 40 miles north of Sacramento.

Several sprint cars were warming up at Marysville Raceway Park when one sped out of control and slammed into the pits.

Dale Wondergem Jr., 68, died at the scene, and 14-year-old Marcus Johnson died after being transported to the hospital.

The driver was identified as 17-year-old Chase Johnson, of Petaluma, in car number 24. He was not hurt in the crash.

Authorities have launched an investigation after getting initial reports that Johnson had a stuck throttle.

“When I saw people running so rapidly towards that area, I thought it was for the driver,” witness Steven Blakesley said.

“And then I realized that there were people on the ground. And then that’s when your heart sinks.”

Johnson and the 14-year-old victim were cousins, deputies said.
