SAN GABRIEL, Calif. (KTLA) — An investigation is underway after El Monte police shot one of two suspects in a stolen 7-Eleven delivery truck.
It happened around 4:40 a.m. Friday at the end of a pursuit at San Marino Avenue and Leslie Drive in San Gabriel.
The chain of events began around 4 a.m. when two suspects stole the truck from in front of a 7-Eleven store in El Monte, L.A. County Sheriff’s Lt. Jon Carina said.
The delivery driver had apparently left the truck running or left the keys inside, Carina said.
El Monte police located the truck heading westbound on the 10 Freeway. The suspects refused to pull over, and a pursuit began.
The truck got off the freeway and continued on surface streets for several minutes, hitting a few cars before stopping, according to Carina.
At that point, one of the suspects got out of the truck and was taken into custody without incident.
The other suspect continued to drive the truck and was pursued for another five to 10 minutes by El Monte police.
“El Monte PD deployed some spike strips in an attempt to stop the truck. That’s when the truck backed up, and then an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Carina said.
The suspect was transported to an area hospital in stable condition.
Multiple shots were fired, but it was not immediately clear how many times he was shot.
No officers were injured in the incident.
A neighbor who spoke to KTLA described hearing the pursuit coming down the street, followed by gunfire.
“We heard sirens coming up, and then all of the sudden there was a burst of maybe six to eight shots, went silent and then another three to four shots after that,” Matt Jiggins said.
You could hear the car chase coming down and that was about it,” he recalled. “My dog woke me up when the first shot went off, I was thinking it was fireworks.”
The suspects have not been identified. They are facing grand theft auto charges, as well as assault on a peace officer.
The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department is assisting El Monte police in the investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500, or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
